The Worst Witch
This film was a blast to shoot. All those kids made it much more fun. Charlotte Ray was such a brilliant actress to work with and very funny. We stayed in touch for years afterwards. All the girls were great, and I really enjoyed getting to play a little bit of comedy.
I know many of the fans grew up with this sweet little film. It is nice to know all these years later, that kids really loved it. Now, they have grown up and they watch it with their kids. I think that is one of the greatest parts of having made these films, knowing that some of them have brought a lot of joy to people.
In this world we need more of that, so I am very proud to have bee a part of this project. People still come up to me and laugh as they recount watching Tim Curry singing “Anything can happen on Halloween”.

Ah another favourite of mine. This movie brings back so many happy memories of me and my cousins dancing around the living room singing “Growing up isn’t easy, scared of every move you make…” I’m smiling now. I can remember when I was younger reading The Worst Witch Books by Jill Murphy always thinking you made a great Mildred Hubble :)! I was so glad when I got this on DVD. What a different witch you were then compared to when you played witch Nancy, I love how diverse your acting is :) x
Oh!!! That is SO SWEET!!!! I can imagine it now!!:) That just put the biggest smile on my face:)!!!
Thanks for that!

The first time my sister and I saw “The Worst Witch” we were hooked on it for life! My mom painstakingly replicated your outfits for our Halloween costumes and we wore them every year until we grew out of them. Now, I’m 32 and still, every year, we watch the movie (reciting every word to many’s annoyance) and carve pumpkins. It’s a tradition I will continue with my future kids. Thank you for creating something so magical to our family!!
Great Post!…
[…] I found your entry interesting thus I’ve added a Trackback. […]…
Absolutely love this movie. I remember when I was a teenager and The Craft came out, I kept looking at you trying to figure out why you looked so familiar. Then I did a little research and realized you were in two of (the many) of my favorite childhood movies, Return to Oz and The Worst Witch. When I realized I had been such a fan of your work my whole life..I just went ah, I think this gal is my favorite actress!
@ Nikki: The Worst Witch is also one of my annual Halloween movies. I’ve made my husband watch it a few times as well. Mwa ha ha ha!
“Anything Can Happen on Halloween” randomly gets stuck in my head from time to time. I’ll find myself singing it at work. I remember being really sad as a kid when I was channel surfing and found the television series of The Worst Witch (I think it was on the Disney channel..) and realizing that Fairuza wasn’t the actress playing Mildred on the show. Not that that young lady was bad, but I just felt so connected to Fairuza’s version of Mildred.
@ Fairuza: I never understood how everyone was British in the movie and then Mildred was the only character that didn’t have a British accent, but it makes sense now that I know you lived in England for a period of time in your life!
Also Fairuza you inspired me in this movie, it always seemed like it would have been fun to shoot it to me. I was kind of a shy kid and I ALWAYS wanted to act and sing. Because of you I took a lot of acting classes in middle and high school. (Wish I would’ve kept pursuing acting, but I really enjoy extensive tattoos, piercings, and un-natural hair colors I like to use my body as an art canvas. :P
It’s hard to find acting jobs if you look as extreme as I do, unless you want to be: Punk Rocker #2 or Goth girl in the credits. LOL.
How awesome was it to work with someone like Tim Curry at such a young age?
Oh sorry to keep blabbing on and on, but I love to read, and for a long period of time in my life I didn’t read much- I couldn’t find things I liked. My mom kept telling me I needed to read the Harry Potter series.
Once I finally felt compelled to read the Potter books I became such a Potter nerd, I said mom you know..if you just would have told me it was kind of like The Worst Witch I would’ve picked it up and read them in a heartbeat!
Now I am a voracious reader and even work in a book store, it’s wonderful to be surrounded by so many great books all the time! Ms.Ru once you get your kids book underway you really need to come to Seattle to do a book signing so I can finally meet you and get you to sign my book! I’ll buy multiple copies if I have to!! I also would really love for you to do an autobiography, that is a story I’ve been dying to read!
Tim Curry singing? Wow! That must be a blast for real! Really ashamed that i haven’t seen THE WORST WITCH yet. I know i’ve seen movies as a kid that i might have forgotten but…
Can hardly wait til i get a chance to see this one.
