“The Bindery” and the finding of a new universe
HELLO ALL!
I had the most wonderful experience today that I wanted to share with you!
I went to this Great place called “The Bindery” On melrose ave. I was met by the shops owner who was One of the coolest people who I have had the pleasure of meeting in a long long while. I saw the most incredible things there. I had no idea that you could do such inventive creative things with books!! I learned about Bindings, The myriad of different techniques and such beauty I tell you, You could probably actually hear my jaw thud as It hit the floor!! I saw books covered in midieval tapestry, collage, even screening a.k.a. Wire mesh!!! The handmade paper books really caught my eye. I have been researching alot for my little book. Many people have been trying to convince me to self-publish and have the books made in China as most people do. After seeing what can be done with handmade books though I was simply blown away. They are true works of art, some of these books are!!!
I strive very hard for perfection with every project I take on, That’s why it takes me so much longer then it would say If some company was doing it all for me. I like to take a hands on approach with everything I do and I think It shows In the uniqueness and quality of the things I make. I put my whole heart into it.
I want my children’s book to be truly special for both the kids and Their parents. Of course doing it this way, Having each book be handmade and hand bound ups the costs significantly, But In the long run the books themselves will be really quite special.
Oh! I do so hope I can find a way to do my book this way!!! I was so exhilarated to learn all of this and to see such unimaginably cool books. I wish you all could have been there with me so You could see it for yourself. It has completely changed the way I will look at books forever. It may just be that these had made book will be special editions but rightly so!! There is a whole world I never knew about!!!! I have been collecting books since I was little and I am an avid reader but I have never see or even thought of anything like this.Did you know that they ow make a kind of paper out of Rock? Can you believe it!?
It gives me so much joy to know that I am making things for people that make them happy. It means the world to me.
I could just SCREAM i am so excited!!!!!!!!
So, On that note I will fondly bid you adieu and go back to this blindingly exciting creative process of making my little book!!!!
I send you all My love and Hope that this finds you all well:)
XO
Sincerely
F

Hi Fairuza,
The Bindery sounds fantastic! I’ll have to make a trip there soon! I love that you’re working on a children’s book - that’s one of my dream projects to accomplish some day as well. I’m sure your book will be unique and imaginative - just like a children’s book should be. The fact that you put so much of yourself into everything you create definitely makes your art special and it means so much more to know it’s coming straight from you and not some factory. Good luck with this project!
xx.
Fairuza,
How exciting! Cannot wait for the book!
That sounds cool,I hate mass produced crap from china.Quality over quantity i always say!!! Cant wait to see the look and content of the finished product.
Paper from rocks?! Really?? How do you bind that together into something that’s flexible but not brittle? Hmm… you’ve sparked my interest! The Bindery sounds wonderful. I love old fashioned hand-made things.
I have been a bookworm since i was a little kid. i learned how to read at the age of 3 by myself, or so they say, so i can completely understand your love for books. Can’t wait for your book to come out!
I wanted to say, I had a dream about you last night, you were living in a subterranean castle in the sewers.. it was really cool. :)
That sounds like a lot of fun. I too am wondering about that paper made from rocks. (I guess everything ends up where it started, and written language has somehow circled around to the stone age.)
I think that these special-made books will continue to be popular, long after the cheap quick-made books have all been replaced with Kindles and iPads.
@jasna You too?
I had a dream last night that I was taking an art class, and there’s Fairuza, giving me a book, and totally hitting on me. :-p
That sounds really cool. It’s awesome that you have the opportunities to do so many projects, it’s not just being an actor but branching out into indie music and writing a book. Whenever the book is published, I’ll be sure to order a copy, read it, then gift it to my cousin who’s a young mother. It would be cool to do that.
Trust me, we do appreciate it!
The bindery sounds amazing, and I too am very curious about the paper made from rocks- I do not have any children but if I ever do, I look forward to reading him/her/them your book!
This is not related to the bindery, but the t - shirts=
they look amazing! I think I will be pre ordering one or 2 very soon!
Hello Fairuza,
I’m excited to see what you do with your book. I’ve worked in a used bookstore now for 4 years, and we’re really big on recycling and donating our overflow. As and idea if you can’t afford to do the handmade route, it would be cool if you go the recycled route. Using recycled paper to make/publish your project.
Look forward to seeing what you come up with!
Best of luck!
