Thoughts on having a personal website

I was sitting here tonight pondering life and I came to some interesting conclusions.

All these years and all these roles, people each have their own idea of who they think I am, what I must be like, or who they’d like me to be. In the past, I have gone out of my way to protect my private life, my family and my relationships from the public. I always saw it as “Well, I do my job, I’m a artist. People don’t need to know who I am in real life. That’s mine.”

Years ago I used to listen to my representatives, and I did interviews and a bunch of press. There’s nothing wrong with doing publicity for a film or a band or your art, but I feel one should be selective about which publications they choose to do. That never sat too well with my reps, or the press or the industry in general. They were very harsh to me at times, and generally very critical. They didn’t seem to grasp who I really was. They weren’t interested in my full life or personality. Instead, they just wanted to make me out to be what they thought people wanted to hear. “She collects knives!! She rides motorcycles!!”, etc. There were a lot of soundbites and quotes out of context. Thus, I was made out to be the reckless, foolish, vulgar, wildchild, for the most part.

Granted, I have always been one to speak my mind, and tell it as i see it. I didn’t have an angle. I wasn’t vying for a place at the top, I had no real interest nor liking for fame or to be “number one”. I enjoyed acting and I still do, very much so. I love film and truly believe it is an art form.

Sometimes, selling yourself so hard is pretty close to selling yourself… out. I had always hoped that my work would speak for me. I don’t think it really suits me to be in a bikini on the cover of men’s magazines. The idea of it cracks me up. (No offense to bikinis intended) :)

Anyway, over the years I have seen several fake Fairuza Balk sites, many folks posing as me on myspace, facebook, twitter, etc. Several fans have told me how disconcerting it was to have been communicating for years with an impostor Fairuza. I don’t know what those people said, or if it was good or bad. However, all of that is part of why I now have my own site. I can speak for myself. I am what I am. Love it or leave it.

It seems that there are actually some folks out there who genuinely want to know what I am really like. I now have this site, and am able to show you a bit of what and who I am. I would also love to see YOUR art, hear YOUR music, read your poetry, etc.

I hope you enjoy the site, and that you understand that it is a work in progress. We will be adding to it a lot as time goes on. I am very excited and proud of the work my web designer Shannon and I have done, and as we progress, it will get more and more of the feel of my own personal aesthetic.

So, welcome, enjoy, and feedback IS welcome :)

An affectionate greeting from Spain. A few years ago would be unthinkable for a bystander, an admirer and fan of an artist’s work could almost communicate in person with them. It’s great to know and learn in the first person of his personal desires and concerns, as well as enjoy their work. Personally I always noticed your strong interpretation, your rebellion mixed with sweetness, and your extraordinary beauty, dangerous beauty. The years have not diluted this feeling, you are still hidden and unattainable dream of someone who discovered as a teenager and today is no longer a child. Every so often I look, I need to hear from you. And I find that remain, stronger than ever, and that says a lot about you, your desire to enjoy the work and share it with us. I take advantage of that fact regularly visiting this wonderful shop window has opened to enjoy yourself and everything that involves you. You’re a myth, and myths endure forever.
All the best of luck to you. Great website. a BIG kiss.

You’ve done a really good job on your new site so far! And the fact that you’re NOT on the cover of every magazine or tabloid; but instead do movies (I’ve enjoyed every one you’ve done), music, occasional talk show apprearances, animal rights work, & art is what I admire most about you :)

    G’day from Austraia!
Fantastic looking site! I will admit i’ve only seen a handful of your films, as awesome as they are they aren’t what draws me towards you.

Not so long ago i joined your Myspace page and you took the time to personally send me a reply… that was the last thing i expected, it had me on a high for days!

You give your fans/friends a lot of your time and attention and for that i’m truly thankful. I can’t wait to hear your music and explore this site a lot more. As we say over here, you’re a top bird!

    Thank you very much:)
It means alot to me that people appreciate and notice that.
I think doing press is a good idea when it is done in moderation.
When i see these young actresses and actors so addicted to having their names in the press that they will pull insane stunts these days to keep their names up there,
It really freaks me out.I think that if you really are an artist, its your art that should speak for you not your personal life or your dirty laundry.
Call me old fashioned, That’s just my opinion.
    Thanks for writing in:)

Thank you for writing in,and for your kind compliments:)
The heavier roles I chose ,I did so because I wanted to challenge myself, to see what I could do and how far I could go.
Acting is alot harder than most people realize and becoming some of those characters is very difficult.
When you really go there though, Yu can feel it, it feels right.
True, I am nothing like any of those characters, I only live with them as long as we shoot then I let them go.
It’s interesting for years now, whenever i do a interview and they ask me about me. my personality, my likes and dislikes, hobbies e.t.c. hey seem not to like what I have to say, as if reading, gardening ,cooking e.t.c. isn’t nearly as interesting to readers as telling them Im so loony that rides around on a motorcycle with a knife collection in her pocket!!! (lol).. They never print the nicer stuff. I’ve just given up. I do press very rarely now.Only when Im promoting a film and Im probably overly cautious when I speak so as not to be misrepresented.
Anyways thanks for writing in and for your compliments:)
    All the best

    What incredible words!! Thank you!:)
have always wanted to go to Spain, I have been dancing Flamenco since I was old enough to stand up on my two feet:)
My father plays Flamenco and My mother also dances.
There is a great story….. When I was only 2 or 3 years old, My father was playing a Flamenco show and the dancers were on stage performing and I got so excited that I crawled up onto the stage and started to dance with them!! 3 years old!! Serious as an be, I had a little shawl and my own little flamenco dress my mother had made,
All of the dancers cleared the stage for me and did Palmas and I did a whole little Dance!!! Dancing my tiny heart out!!!
Some day, I will get there, and will see it all…….
Thank you so much for writing in and for your beautiful words:)
    Sincerely

Totally an awesome layout and design F I love what you have done with your new site and have been a fan for a very long time, and I must say I always thought people took alot of things out of context, as in truth most people only see and hear what they want. Awesome music love the site, Be Well, and look forward to more from this awesome site.
