Madame Amy Hi, Fairuza. You have your own occult store in Los Angeles. Is it true your a Wiccan

Fairuza Balk:  I wouldn't say im a Wiccan.. I'm an occultist. I'm just vary into the hidden side of life. But im varry glad Wicca is around.  "There's no you have to be this or that" to practis it. More people can reach it and get a lot out of it. And it's also vary much more supportive toward woman, and a lot of religions aren't. 

MA: There seems to be a lot of phony tarot out there--especially those 1-900 deals.

FB:  I called one of those out of curiosity once, and the guy goes, "You have four brothers, do you not ?' And I said "No I don't." And he goes, " Well, then, you have four men in your life. I see you boss, and you have two lovers," and.....And I said, "No im self-employed and at the moment im single." And just everything he said was wrong. So I said just out of curiosity, can you tell me what cards your laying down ?' and he said, "NO I cant do that." And I said, "Because Ididn't hear you shuffling. " And the guy was like, "Well, your time is up, I gotta go.

MA: I know, I don't like getting the Tower either.

FB: I got the Tower last night. But I just moved into what was the ' tallest building in L.A. for 50 years, so I think that would pretty much correspond to the tower.

MA: You also recently finished the film Personal Velocity, which opened at Sundance. What was it like shooting on digital video?

FB: It was a trip. DV gives you a ton more freedom because the camera's smaller. It was Only a weeklong shoot for me-very short and intensive. I really like working that way, because you have to go very much on instinct. I think that it makes the performance more natural than if you're doing 860 takes. I think it was Frank Sinatra who wouldnly do one take of each thing. He would just say, "No, you have one take, and it'll be the best take, so that's all I'm gonna do."

MA: What have you been up to when you're not on the set?

FB: I'm in a band right now-I've made music all my life, and my entire family is in music. So, it's not the kind of thing where I want to go out and have my own perfume label, be produced out the wazoo, and make pop music.

MA: So, you don't want to be J.Lo. Is that what you're saying?

FB: I didn't say that! I made a reference to perfume-I guess that kind of gave it away.

MA: Do you have a name for the band yet?

FB: It's not concrete yet. But I'm thinking G13. Someone told me that there was a strain of marijuana grown by the government, and that's what they called it. And it's just kind of a funny name.

MA: It sounds kind of ominous.

FB: Yeah, it is. But everybody's like, "Oh, like PG-13?"

MA: OK, what do you want to ask the cards? It can be something trivial if you want. [Madame Amy shuffles]

FB: What should I ask? Let's see. Are my cats going to be happy in the new place?

MA: Tell me your cats' names?

FB: There's Momo and Titi, which is short for Tennessee. And then one of their names is kinda out there. Originally it was Squeaky, because when she was a kitten she squeaked. [she squeaks to demonstrate] And then from Squeaky, it became Squeaky-D, and then from Squeaky-D, it became Wacka-da.

.NIA:Wacka-da?

FB: You know, like "Squeaky-D, Wacka-da!" And then there's Dodi. And then there's the babies.

INIA: Oooh, there are babies?

FB: Yes. [laughs nervously] They're little calico-

MA Are you embarrassed?

FB: Well, you're not supposed to let your cats get pregnant!

MA: Oh, right. [Madame Amy deals I Let's see what the cards have to say about your kitties. Our first card is the Ace of Pentacles-that's some good security and comfort and all that. And we drew another ace, the Ace of Cups, as our third card. Aces signify the beginning of a cycle. The Ace of Cups suggests the start of a new feeling-in this case, probably a new feeling of happiness in your new domicile. It looks like your cats are going to feel very secure and grounded in the new apartment, and this represents a new beginning in material happiness. Our middle card is the Page of Cups, which is also great. Although it's not an Ace, it also signifies new beginnings. The Page is the beginning of the court cards in the tarot deck, so it represents a beginning that is a little more established and significant than the Ace. The Page of Cups shows me that you and your cats are going to be satisfied in your relationships with each other, and with your new home, and that you are all making a-new commitment to living in L.A. So, overall, your cats should be comfy in the new place and pleased with their owner.

FB: Oh, that's fantastic!
