Fairuza Balk
You can tell Fairuza Balk grew up in Canada by the way she pronounces the word soi7y (more like sorcery), which she said-exponentially Annette Bening's naive teenage puppet in Valmont But Balk's nationality is irrelevant. Her nearly transparent skin and down-turned mouth give the young actress a wan frailty that transcends both time and place: perfect for period pieces, slices of working-class life (like Gas Food Lodging), and strung-out-hooker roles (as in the forthcoming Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead). In real life, Balk, 20, lives in Vancouver, has a nose ring, peroxide hair, and no illusions. "I don't fit into any kind of slat," she likes to say. "I'm not gorgeous. I'm not tall. I feel like I'm a little different" Exactly. (Suit by Jil Sander. Hair Michael Boadi. Makeup: Lynn Barron. Details, see Credits page.)
Here are two of the same picture I folded the corner over on one to show that it's the one you see all over the net. I put it up a long time ago and I put the holes in it so I could put it in a picture book. I got another copy of it with no holes so i'm putting it up also.
